Trekking to discover the Monte Cucco cave: the heart of the mountain and its forests with lunch at a restaurant

This morning we’ll enjoy a unique experience in the heart of Monte Cucco Park, one of Umbria’s most fascinating natural sites, where nature, geology, and spectacular views blend together in an unforgettable adventure.
We’ll begin with a pleasant, easy hike along a picturesque trail that traverses the mountainside, offering splendid views of the high-altitude meadows and surrounding landscape. With an elevation gain of approximately 190 meters and a 1.8 km route, we’ll reach the East Entrance of the famous Monte Cucco Cave, located at 1,390 meters above sea level.
From here, an exciting adventure into the heart of the mountain begins. Climbing stairs and walkways, we’ll immerse ourselves in one of Europe’s most important karst systems, with over 30 kilometers of tunnels and nearly 900 meters of depth. Along a fascinating underground route of approximately 800 meters, we’ll visit spaces of extraordinary beauty, such as the majestic Cathedral Hall, the Margherita Hall, the Beak Hall, the evocative Fountain Hall, until we reach the mysterious Secret Passage and the spectacular Terminal Hall, authentic masterpieces sculpted by nature over millions of years.

The thrill continues as we exit onto the mountain’s north face, climbing an 8-meter well equipped with a ladder. A breathtaking view awaits us: a spectacular natural terrace offering sweeping views of the entire Umbria-Marche Apennines and, on clear days, all the way to the Adriatic Sea.
We will then reach a refuge at Pian delle Macinare, immersed in the tranquility of the Park, where a delicious lunch of local specialties and drinks will await us.
After lunch, we’ll resume our journey back to the starting point, crossing magnificent centuries-old beech forests and scenic ridge paths overlooking the Chiascio Valley and the characteristic villages of the Monte Cucco Park.
A final stretch of about an hour’s walk, with an elevation gain of 250 meters, will take us back to Pian di Monte, concluding an intense and unforgettable day, rich in nature, views, and emotions.
