ASSISI with New Year’s lunch and the living nativity scenePeace and Good! This is the greeting with which Assisi, a quintessential Franciscan place, welcomes you, not only in Umbria and inItaly, but all over the world. St. Francis was in fact born in Assisi in 1182; in the place where his birthplace is believed to have been located, today rises the New Church. It was in Assisi that he was baptized, in the Cathedral of San Rufino; it was among its alleys that he spent his youth dreaming of a future as a valiant knight; it was here, where the Church of Santa MariaMaggiore stands today, in the Piazza del Vescovado, that he stripped himself, repudiating earthly goods for love of God and his brothers and sisters. It is still inAssisi, in the Church of San Damiano, that praying before the crucifix, he received the task of renewing Christ’s Church,it is in the town square that he began his preaching and his work of charity and peace, and it is finally here that he died in 1226.His remains are preserved in the Basilica of St. Francis, but the saint still lives in every stone of Assisi.Walk through its enchanting alleys and free visit to the Franciscan places. Delicious New Year’s lunch.
As the sun sets, we will reach an ancient village where alleys, characteristic corners are enveloped in a mystical, magical atmosphere. Called together, the community reconstructs the Jewish environment of 2,000 years ago and amid plays of light and shadow sidislides in the castle and along the river, enlivening even the usually hidden alleys and corners: the living nativity scene.
