Lasagna cooking class

Lasagna is a traditional Italian dish that has a rich and fascinating history, dating back to ancient times. The origins of lasagna can be traced back to ancient Rome. The ancient Romans prepared a dish called “lasanum“, which means “container” or “pot” in Latin, and which was used to cook layers of dough. However, the Roman recipe was very different from the modern one, often comprising only layers of pasta with legumes and cheese.

During the Middle Ages, the dish began to evolve. The first written evidence of lasagna as we know it today dates back to the fourteenth century. In the “Liber de Coquina“, one of the earliest medieval cookbooks, a version of the dish is described with layers of pasta interspersed with cheese and spices. This is an important step towards modern lasagna, but the key element of meat sauce is still missing.

Lasagna as we know it today began to take shape in Italy, particularly in the regions of Emilia-Romagna and Campania. The Emilia-Romagna version is probably the most famous, featuring layers of egg pasta, Bolognese sauce, béchamel sauce and Parmigiano-Reggiano. In Campania, lasagna is often made with ricotta, mozzarella, meatballs, and tomato sauce. The Neapolitan lasagna is a variant that developed in southern Italy, different from the Emilian version. In this variant, in addition to ricotta and mozzarella, hard-boiled eggs, fried meatballs, cured meats and Neapolitan ragù are added. This type of lasagna is particularly rich and tasty. With Italian emigration in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, lasagna spread all over the world, becoming an internationally appreciated dish. In the United States, for example, lasagna has become a common dish in Italian-American households, often with some local modifications. Today, lasagna is the traditional Italian Sunday dish and a testament to the rich culinary tradition and its ability to evolve and adapt. From a simple Roman dish to one of the symbols of Italian cuisine in the world, lasagna continues to delight the palates of anyone lucky enough to enjoy it.

Participating in a lasagna cooking class allows participants to immerse themselves in Italian culture in an authentic way. By cooking a traditional dish such as lasagna you learn specific Italian culinary techniques such as preparing fresh egg pasta, cooking a perfect ragù or making a smooth béchamel sauce with fresh and local ingredients, guarantees an authentic taste that can hardly be replicated elsewhere and you can appreciate the differences compared to the versions tried in their countries of origin. These skills can be applied to other recipes and cuisines. Unlike reading a recipe or watching a video, a cooking class offers a hands-on, interactive experience. Participants can receive immediate feedback from the instructor, thus improving their cooking skills in real-time.

Our cooking classes are often social events, allowing you to meet and interact with other people, both locals and tourists. This can enrich the travel experience and create new friendships.
